The purpose
The purpose of a front of house manager is to be in charge of ushers within the theatre and to ensure that the theatre environment is clean and well kept. Alongside running the sales of stock within the theatre.
The ASM is part of the management team of the production that is going on. His or her behavior should reflect this,the ASM should set an example in punctuality and professionalism It is important that the ASM is flexible and will take initiative because each production is different, an ASM’s specific responsibilities will change.This is a very time consuming job.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
Before the rehearsal period begins the ASM should help the Stage Manager tape out the floorplan, distribute scripts, pull rehearsal props and furniture, and help with any needed clerical help.Before each rehearsal, the ASM should help the SM insure the stage or rehearsal space is ready. This could include sweeping, setting up furniture, set pieces, and props. Robinson Theatre ASMs should know how to run the fly lines. The SM may ask the ASM to contact late company members. It is very useful to have a assistant stage manager as we all know back stage can get quite busy with people rushing around,quick changes,rebooting microphones and topping up make up there is always someone to go to if you're in need and also makes it easier for everyone around,which means making the show continue smoothly.

It is also important for Assistant Stage Managers to be patient as many of the tasks that they have to undertake take time and they cannot be rushed. A good Assistant Stage Manager will have strong leadership skills as they will need to get lots of people to listen to them carefully. They will need to have good communication and people skills as an Assistant Stage Managers job involves lots of contact with a variety of people. Assistant Stage Managers need to have a high attention to detail so that they can spot if anything is wrong. It is important for Assistant Stage Managers to have good IT skills as their job is incredibly technical and will be heavily based around computer work. It is very useful for Assistant Stage Managers to remain calm under pressure, also they should be able to multi-task and think on their feet in case anything goes wrong during both rehearsals and shows that needs to be sorted out quickly. It's important for Assistant Stage Managers to be confident in any decisions they make and to be able to make decisions quickly as there isn't much time in the build up to a show to spend on making decisions.
